Congratulations on your new partial denture. At Masters Dentistry, we’re here to support you as you adjust to your new smile. The following guidelines will help you care for your partial denture.
Cleaning Your Partial Denture
Clean your partial denture with a denture brush and water at least once daily.
A mild hand soap or dish soap can be used to clean your partial denture.
Do not use toothpaste to clean your partial denture.
Rinse your partial denture and mouth after eating.
If you have natural teeth, brush twice daily and floss as recommended.
Storing Your Partial Denture
Remove your partial denture at night to allow your gums to rest.
Store your partial denture in room temperature water.
Never use hot water to clean or soak your partial denture, as this can warp it and cause permanent damage.
A soaking solution such as Efferdent may be used a few times per week if desired.
Never store your partial denture in a napkin, as it may be accidentally thrown away.
If you have pets, keep your partial denture out of reach and store it safely in a denture case.
Eating
Your partial denture may feel different at first, this is normal.
Start with soft foods, take small bites, and chew on both sides at the same time.
Although your partial denture is designed to be retentive, some movement is expected and food may occasionally get trapped underneath.
Speaking
Speech changes are normal at first.
Practice speaking or reading out loud.
Soreness and Adjustments
Mild soreness or pressure spots are normal.
Adjustments of partial denture can be scheduled as needed to improve comfort.
Fit Over Time
If your partial denture feels loose or uncomfortable, it may need an adjustment.
Clasps can often be adjusted in the office to improve fit and retention.
Do not bend or adjust the clasps on your partial denture yourself.
Do not attempt to repair your partial denture.
Partial dentures typically do not require adhesive. If you find it beneficial, it may be used sparingly.
What to Expect
Your partial denture will feel new at first, and there is an adjustment period.
With time, eating and speaking will feel more natural.
Keeping your natural teeth healthy is essential, as they support your partial denture.
