Masters Family Dentistry in Clinton Township

At our dental practice in Clinton Township, we love being able to get children started on good dental health practices as soon as possible. Beginning preventive dentistry at an early age is key to establishing good oral health, a positive dental experience, and a great relationship with your child.

The American Association for Pediatric Dentistry has guidelines for caring for your children’s teeth at every age, beginning with babies who haven’t started teething.

Dental Care for Babies: “First Visit by First Birthday”

  • Before your baby starts teething, start by cleaning your baby’s gums with a very soft infant toothbrush, or a cloth and water.
  • Visit a dentist when the first tooth comes in, between six and 12 months of age.

Preventing Tooth Decay in Children

  • Once your child’s teeth have started coming in, start brushing them twice a day. Dental problems such as early childhood tooth decay can begin once the child has stopped nursing.
  • Children shouldn’t fall asleep with anything in a baby bottle and drinking juice from a bottle should be discouraged.

When Should Thumb Sucking Stop?

  • Thumb sucking is normal for infants, and many stop the habit naturally around age two.
  • Prolonged thumb sucking can create crooked teeth or bite problems.
  • If your child is still sucking a thumb or finger, please ask us about how you can help him or her stop.

We’re committed to your child’s total health and well-being. Our clean office and sterilization protocols are our first and most important steps in taking care of you and your child! If you have any questions about our procedures, please be sure to ask us at your next appointment.

Please call our dental office in Clinton Township, regardless of your child’s age. It’s never too late to get into the habit of regular dental checkups!
